Regrettably, during a bombing raid on our city in May 1940, three paintings and several etchings by James Ensor were lost. Today, those three lost paintings are being faithfully reproduced in full size with the cooperation of the Art Academy by the Sea. They are appropriately exhibited in a bunker at the Provincial domain Atlantikwall Raversyde. In this war-like environment, the artworks, untouched by time and violence, present a striking contrast between their beauty and the ravaged concrete space. This underscores the lasting impact of war, while Ensor's timeless beauty prevails. Considering current conflicts, the event from Ensor's life maintains contemporary societal significance, 84 years after the bombing.
The Ensor City Festival provides the ideal setting for a unique experience in group. The various exhibitions offer a fascinating insight into the world of James Ensor and his influence on the art world. The options are diverse and are tailor-made each time.
