Even though Theobald's Boothuisje is the narrowest Art Nouveau building in Ostend, during the Ensor year, two exhibitions take place. Step into a time machine and journey back briefly. ‘The Vlaanderenstraat during the time of James Ensor’ is an exhibition with photos, documents, and old postcards depicting 'his street' between 1860 and 1949. How did this street look during Ensor's life? The buildings? The people? ‘Patchwork of Ensor’s street by Irène Philips’ showcases a contemporary vision of the Vlaanderenstraat through paintings and drawings. Irène Philips, a visual artist, has lived in Theobald's Boothuisje since 2013, using it as her studio. The building stands as a silent witness to a grand past and an ever-evolving present.
The Ensor City Festival provides the ideal setting for a unique experience in group. The various exhibitions offer a fascinating insight into the world of James Ensor and his influence on the art world. The options are diverse and are tailor-made each time.
